Clay Conference 2024: The focus is on clay!

The head Dr. Rüdiger Giese of the 3D-US-Lab presents a poster about the CHENILLE project at the International Conference on Clays in Natural and Engineered Barriers for Radioactive Waste Confinement (Clay Conference) in Hannover which takes place from November 24th to 29th 2024.

The Clay Conference provides a unique networking platform for sharing scientific and technological knowledge related to clay (https://clayconference2024.de/). About 460 scientists from 20 countries (Fig. 1) participate at the Clay Conference to discuss their research and new developments (Figs. 2 and 3) also in connection to radioactive waste disposal or other usages of the subsurface in which clay barriers play a key role (https://www.bgr.bund.de/DE/Gemeinsames/Nachrichten/Aktuelles/aktuelles_node.html).

The CHENILLE project studies the coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior in fault zones within shale formations through thermal and fluid injection experiments. The experiments were conducted at the Tournemire Underground Research Laboratory in southern France. The poster reports the experimental set-up and the monitoring concepts like Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Acoustic Emission (AE) and active seismic.
