New seismic pulse source (SQ5) for tunnel prediction successfully tested

The 3D-US Lab team, led by Dr. Rüdiger Giese, tested the new seismic pulse source (SQ5) together with the client Dr. Thomas Dickmann, Head of Geophysics Amberg Technologies AG, on the premises of the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam for use in the tunnel for seismic advance exploration

Potsdam, May 27: A new milestone was reached within the new product development of the seismic pulse source (SQ5) at the Potsdam site with the execution of a product performance test. Within the framework of a production and development contract between the GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam and the Swiss company Amberg Technologies AG, a new source for advance exploration in tunnel construction was developed by the 3D Underground Seismic Lab under the direction of Dr. Rüdiger Giese. The team under Dr. Giese specializes, among other things, in the individual development and manufacture of prototype seismic sources. The requirements to build such a source are high, as they have to withstand the adverse conditions underground. "For use during tunneling, the seismic sources must be powerful but also compact in design and robust against the harsh environmental conditions such as moisture and dust and mechanical vibrations," says Dr. Rüdiger Giese, Head of 3D-US Lab.

Product performance test of the seismic pulse source (SQ5) at the GFZ

Testing took place on the Telegrafenberg in Potsdam on a suitable test stone, together with Dr. Thomas Dickmann, Head of Geophysics Amberg Technologies AG. Kay Krüger, 3D-US Lab engineer for electrical engineering, supervised the test and was satisfied with the result: "With small modifications, the field test can be carried out under real conditions underground in Tournemire (France)." With the completion of the field test in June, the development of the seismic source (SQ 5) is finished and serial production can be started.
